We were delighted to welcome back to school Old Bedfordians Rob Holden (13-18), Finlay Cummings (10-21) and Alex Robins (17-22), who were all Bedford Golf Scholars. Since leaving school, all three have studied at US universities, also on golf scholarships, and returned to inspire our current talented crop of golfers with information about studying and playing golf in the US.

Rob has already graduated from university in Ohio and is now back in the UK making his way in the golfing world. Finlay is currently studying International Business at Harding University in Arkansas and Alex is studying Accounting at Shorter University in Georgia. Together, they explained that life as a student athlete in the US is busy but extremely fulfilling.

Finlay explained, “There is a need to keep on top of academic work whilst devoting almost all of my spare time to golf.”

The university golf scene in the US is extremely competitive but it offers an unrivalled opportunity to become a pro golfer and gain a degree at the same time. We are therefore delighted to hear that current Upper Sixth Former Archie Mathers has recently received some good news and will follow in the OBs’ footsteps with a scholarship to Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina.

At the end of the evening, the OBs could not resist a visit to the school golf simulator and a chance to catch up with Bedford School golf coaches Holly Reddick, Keith Thomson and Director of Sport, Barry Burgess.

Director of IB Adrian Finch commented, “The school is hugely grateful to the OBs for giving up their time to talk to current students. It was wonderful to see them so happy, enthusiastic and successful.”

Golf Scholarships at Bedford School

Back in 2006, with the financial assistance of the Bedford School Foundation Trust, in association with several OBs, the Bedford School Golf Scholarship programme was founded. Since then, we have attracted 36 golf scholars who have achieved significant success in regional and national schools’ golf tournaments over the years.

Many of these boys have gone on to study overseas, particularly in the US, where they have been awarded scholarships and the opportunity to continue their golf pursuits alongside studying for a degree.
