Boys at Bedford School enjoy links with Bedford Girls’ School, a single sex girls school, which also belongs to The Harpur Trust. Many of our boys have sisters at Bedford Girls’ School and we actively encourage and organise co-curricular co-educational activities between the two schools.

In the Prep School, boys and girls from both schools enjoy joint swimming galas and sports activities, art mornings, visiting speakers and quizzes.

In the Upper School, boys benefit from joint theatre productions, music ensembles, debates, combined societies, discos, film evenings and workshops. In particular, our partnership with Bedford Girls’ School in our provision of the Combined Cadet Force has strengthened; girls and boys, working together developing skills of leadership, self-reliance and resilience, particularly at the joint cadet camps.

As they progress through the schools, opportunities for boys and girls to learn together continue to present themselves. The two schools collaborate in some areas of the PHSE curriculum to enable pupils to share thoughts, attitudes and experiences as they develop into adulthood. Leadership skills are built (in collaboration with up to twelve other sixth form settings in Bedford borough) through the Ready2Lead? programme; and many lectures, presentations and careers / higher education events see pupils from Bedford School learning alongside not only Bedford Girls’ School pupils, but also pupils from many other local schools.

We continue to look for more ways to bring the two schools together such as raising money through joint charity efforts. Both schools see the value of single sex education but actively seek to provide co-educational activities between the two schools.
