We are delighted to officially unveil the Bedford School Estate Masterplan.
This ambitious development project, which will strategically repurpose existing spaces and lead to the creation of a brand new academic building, is set to shape the Bedford School estate for generations to come.
An Academic Hub
At the heart of the Estate Masterplan lies a stunning, new academic building, designed by RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture winners, Niall McLaughlin Architects. Planning permission has been granted to replace the existing Edwardian properties on Burnaby Road with this new building, which will be home to our maths, computer science, economics and business studies departments as well as a base for entrepreneurship. Importantly, the building will also serve as a resource for our local community.
The building will provide enviable 21st-century, flexible teaching spaces that are carefully designed to support the school’s three areas of strategic focus: Digital Technology, Community Partnerships, and Entrepreneurship, all areas vital for boys’ futures.
The Wider Plan
The space created by the new building will also allow for the school’s pastoral care to be consolidated into a new centre, and provide upgrades to eight academic departments, three day houses and a boarding house.
Furthermore, the Masterplan ensures that visitors are met with a striking vista of the estate as they step into the extended academic heart of the school. The design of the modern and eye-catching new building complements and sympathetically blends with the stunning architecture of the main school, visible just beyond: a future focus and proud heritage intertwined.

The Estate Masterplan represents the most important evolution Bedford School has seen since its arrival on the current site in 1891. The large-scale development will ensure that Bedford School maintains its reputation as a 'destination school' for day and boarding pupils for generations to come, a school that provides an exciting future for boys through unrivalled future-focused learning spaces and facilities, combined with a holistic education that prepares them for the challenges that lie ahead and exciting futures beyond.
A PLAN WITH A CONSCIENCE
The Burnaby Road development will be constructed using environmentally advanced technologies, materials and glazing.
We also recognise our responsibility to our neighbours and will minimise disruption to local residents throughout the building works.
