The Harpur Trust

About Us

Bedford School is proud to be part of The Harpur Trust, a charitable foundation that has been enriching lives in the Borough of Bedford since 1566.

Inspired by the vision of its founder, Sir William Harpur, the Trust continues to make a lasting impact through:

  • Promoting access to high-quality education
  • Supporting individuals facing illness, hardship, or distress
  • Providing recreational facilities that enhance social welfare

The Harpur Trust owns, manages, and supports four leading independent schools: Bedford School, Bedford Girls’ School, Bedford Modern School, and Pilgrims Pre-Preparatory School.

In addition, the Trust sponsors the HEART Academies Trust and collaborates with local state schools through a variety of educational initiatives and grant-making programmes.

Our links with Bedford Girls’ School

While Bedford School and Bedford Girls’ School each value the benefits of single-sex education, we actively foster opportunities for boys and girls to learn and grow together through a wide range of co-curricular activities.

In the Prep Years, pupils from both schools enjoy joint activity days and sports events, encouraging early friendships and teamwork.

In the Upper School, older pupils benefit from a rich programme of shared experiences, including:

  • Joint theatre productions and music ensembles
  • Debating competitions and academic societies
  • Collaborative workshops and leadership training

Our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) partnership is a particular highlight, where boys and girls train side by side, developing leadership, resilience and self-reliance.

As pupils progress, opportunities for co-educational learning continue to grow. The two schools collaborate to jointly teach PSHE. Pupils also participate in joint lectures, careers events and higher education workshops alongside peers from across the borough.

Our links with Pilgrims Pre-Preparatory School

Many boys begin their Harpur Trust journey at Pilgrims Pre-Preparatory School, which offers outstanding early years education and childcare from 3 months to 7 years (end of Year 2). Pilgrims lays the foundation for a lifelong love of learning in a nurturing and stimulating environment.

Throughout the year, we run joint activities to give Pilgrims pupils a genuine feel for life at Bedford Prep School. From attending performances to taking part in shared events, activity days and even sporting competitions, these experiences help build familiarity and confidence.

Our Prep School staff work closely with colleagues at Pilgrims to ensure a smooth and positive transition, helping boys feel ready and excited for the next stage of their educational journey at Bedford Prep School.
