The Panacea Society Tour and Tea

April 21 | 11:30 - 13:30

The OB Club recently delved into the school connections with The Panacea Society and found that Mabel Barltrop, later ‘Octavia’, sent her son Ivan Charles Barltrop (1906 - 1911) to school here in the early 1900's. (Ivan seen here sitting on the window sill)

The Panacea Society has a fascinating history, with the buildings and interiors remaining largely unchanged since its creation in 1919 on Albany Road, Bedford. Did you know that No 9 Newnham Road used to belong to Bedford School and was used as a boarding house?

Having discovered the connection, we decided to organise a free spring tour of The Panacea Society Museum and its gardens.

The Museum reopened its doors to the public in February this year, with its new entrance on 11 Newnham Road and a new exhibition entitled “Panacea: A Cure for All Ills”. A perfect opportunity to visit and discover more about this part of Bedford's historical past.

We would love to invite OB’s, Past Parents and Current Parents to join us for a free tour of the Society. Refreshments will be available from the Society café afterwards if you wish.

Sunday 21st April at 11.30am, with attendees meeting at 11 Newnham Road.

Channel 4 made a fascinating documentary in 2002 called 'The Panacea Society - Maidens of the Lost Ark (Bedford)' that is a fascinating watch and well worth seeing. Follow link here.
