St Albans Walking Talk: Peter Burley – The Battles of St Albans & Lunch

March 17 | 10:30 - 17:00

Peter Burley is a well-known local author who has co-written a book entitled The Battles of St. Albans. The city is unique in having been the site of two pivotal battles during the Wars of the Roses, yet this is the first book-length account to have been published. It offers a gripping account of the fighting, and of the politics and intrigue that led to it, and it incorporates the results of the latest research. The authors also plot the events of over 500 years ago onto the twenty-first century landscape of St Albans so that the visitor can retrace the course of each battle on the present-day ground.

Peter will be giving a walking talk describing the first battle which took place in 1455 in and around what is now the centre of St. Albans. Meeting at a coffee shop in St. Albans around 10:30am before a short introduction outside the Town Hall Museum by Peter to set the scene. When the museum opens at 11:00am we can go inside the museum and look at a short five-minute audio/visual presentation about the battles. Peter will then lead a tour that would take in the key locations of the first battle of St. Albans, including the Cathedral and St. Peter's Church.

The distances involved are no more than a few hundred yards and all on pavement (no off road involved).

This will then be followed by a meal in the newly refurbished Saint & Sinner Pub located right in the centre of St Albans.

If you would like to book your free walking tour place, please fill in the form here. Further details about the lunch will be provided in due course, however there is no set menu or requirements.
