Art Society Lunchtime Talk – ‘Vision and Invention in the Early Work of Graham Sutherland (1903-1980)’

Stephen Laird (73-84) is now a University Chaplain and Lecturer (Theology) and Parish Priest. As a mature student in 2006 he did a Kent PhD in Art History, specialising in John Piper, Graham Sutherland and Peter Lanyon and the 'moral meaning' of British 20th century landscape painting. He has written a number of books and catalogue essays including the essay on 'Landscape' in the new ed. of the Oxford Dictionary of Christian Art and Architecture, and he regularly describes Piper paintings for Christie's, two of his of essays were recently featured on Christie's website.

For this talk Stephen will be focussing on the work of Graham Sutherland one of the major British artists of the 20th century. All are welcome to this talk - including OBs.
