Teacher of Art (3D/Sculpture Specialist)
Full Time - Commencing September 2024
Bedford School’s outstanding Art department seeks a full-time teacher to join the team as a 3-D and Sculpture specialist from September 2024. Art is a highly popular subject at Bedford School both as an examined subject across GCSE, A-Level and IB courses and as a central pillar of the thriving creative life of the school.
The successful candidate will be part of a team of three full time teachers and a part-time technician, all of whom are practicing artists. The successful candidate will take charge of a dedicated and recently refurbished Sculpture Studio, which enjoys an enviable position in the school grounds. They will be a team player: the ability to communicate well with colleagues and students is essential, to enable the happy and creative working environment in the Art department to continue.
The successful candidate will be able to make a substantial contribution to Art at our school both as an academic subject and as an exciting part of our co-curricular offer in the creative arts. They will be ready to make the most of the resources and specialist facilities available at a leading independent boarding school.
This role could be an exciting new challenge for an experienced teacher seeking to broaden their experience amidst outstanding facilities and artistic opportunities. We wish to appoint a Teacher of History for September 2024. The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for History, a desire to inspire this in others and will be eager to develop their own teaching skills across Year 9, GCSE, IB/A-Level, and university preparation.
The History department at Bedford has a strong academic focus. We have a good record of success in terms of university uptake, including Oxbridge. Our results are strong: in 2023 the IGCSE cohort achieved 87% 9-7 and the most common grade was a 9. A-Level and IB results are also strong, with a pleasing number of pupils going on to study History beyond Bedford at some of the country’s most competitive universities, including Oxbridge. The department is also proud of its work supporting boys’ interest in history beyond examined GCSE, A Level and IB courses. We have a good record of success in essay competitions, with past pupils winning the Peterhouse and Trinity prizes. Many of our IB pupils take the subject for their IB Extended Essay. The History Society is active and has had lively discussions on topical issues as well as led whole school assemblies exploring historical themes. The department seeks to foster a lasting commitment and love of history; we aim to make lessons interesting, relevant and enjoyable.

Deputy Head Pastoral

An exceptional candidate is sought for the post of Deputy Head (Pastoral) for September 2024 to take responsibility for the pastoral life of this successful and inclusive school. The role will oversee the implementation of strategy and policy in this area and will be the senior day-to-day practitioner on pastoral matters in the school. Bedford School launched a brand new Media Studies department in September 2023 to offer A-Level Media Studies to pupils in our Sixth Form. Media Studies is now a popular choice for Sixth Form pupils, with two teaching groups in Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth.

Teacher of Academic Support (SEND)
Fixed Term Contract
We wish to appoint an enthusiastic and well-qualified part-time Teacher of SEND on a Fixed Term Pay as Advised (by lesson) contract to join a dynamic, successful, and thriving department. We are looking to secure an appointment to start as soon as possible. We currently envisage the role lasting until Easter. We welcome applications from both experienced SEND specialists and those looking to develop an in-demand specialism, including recent graduates. The role is envisaged as up to 19 teaching periods a week (approximately 0.5) on what is currently a Monday to Thursday schedule and may include some lunchtime lessons. There may be small changes to the timetable to reflect changing needs of our SEND pupils through the academic term and we therefore are open to discussing the possibility of alternative days and indeed job-sharing to suit personal and professional commitments of the right candidate.
This position will involve teaching pupils aged 13-18 from a diverse range of backgrounds. The department support pupils who are neurodiverse including pupils who have dyslexia, autism, ADHD. Academic Lessons can be on a 1:1 basis or small group focusing on English and Maths, study and revision skills as well as supporting pupils with different areas of the curriculum as required. The ideal candidate will have a genuine passion for supporting pupils who are neurodiverse, will be eager to develop their own teaching skills and share ideas with colleagues, and will celebrate and actively promote diversity.
*Please note that due to our game’s afternoons, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, academic instruction only takes place in the morning. A teaching period at Bedford School is 40 minutes long.
