Talented, young actor Daniel Lee (Y5) is again treading the boards in London as he steps up to take on his latest musical.

Following his brilliant performance in Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol, Daniel is now appearing in the West End in a new musical based on the life of Gino Bartali called Glory Ride. The powerful musical tells the story of Gino Bartali, Tour de France winner and one of the most beloved Italian athletes of all time. Unbeknownst to many, this cycling hero’s efforts saved hundreds of persecuted Jews and other refugees, many of whom were children. It is an incredible tale of bravery that remained largely untold until his death.

Talking about the new musical, Daniel explained that he plays Gino Bartali’s younger brother Giulio. For this part, which sees him in the opening number, Daniel has had to learn to speak with an Italian accent; an accent he tells us is even harder to develop than the southern American one he needed to master for his last musical. Daniel also plays one of the many children saved by Gino later in the musical.

Daniel will perform two to three shows per week for the musical, which runs until the end of July. Such a commitment, however, does not come without sacrifice, but Daniel told us, “It’s very fun, so it’s worth it.”

If you would like to see Glory Ride and Daniel in action, the musical is on at the Charing Cross Theatre, and should you need any further convincing, Daniel reliably tells us that “it’s got really amazing songs.”
