We were thrilled to hear this week that Upper Sixth Former and golf scholar Alex Robins has received an unconditional academic and golf scholarship to study at Shorter University, Georgia, USA from this summer.

Alex is the fourth Bedford School boy in the last three years to have secured a golf scholarship at a US university, which is fast becoming a goal to which many of our golf scholars aspire to. Alex explained, “School has given me a lot of progression opportunities, and all of the boys here look to US universities as the next step in their education journey as they get to play golf all year-round while also studying for a degree.”

Alex started playing golf aged just nine-years-old after his mum signed him up to a school holiday course. He soon caught the bug and started entering competitions. When he started to win, he felt motivated to get better and better. He has always dreamed of gaining a scholarship at a golf college in the US when he finishes Sixth Form, and so is over the moon to have actually achieved his dream.

Alex also explained how the school has been a great help to his golf career. He plays three times a week at Woburn Golf Club, which, Alex says, “is arguably the best facility in the country”.

Additionally, the school’s TrackMan golf simulator has also helped Alex a great deal as it provides analytical data to help him fine-tune his game. This, coupled with first-class coaching from our school professional golfers and the head coach at Woburn, has enabled Alex to really progress his game.

Alex came to Bedford School on a golf scholarship when he was 13-years-old and is now captain of the school golf team. Master in Charge of Golf Keith Thomson said of him, “His endeavour in the classroom is the same as I see from him on the golf course. Everything he does he puts his all into and he balances it all really well. He has been captain of the Golf Club this year, a role which he has undertaken to a first-class standard. His organisation has been brilliant, I don’t need to prompt him for registers at the end of a game, he already has them ready. He sets a great example and is a fantastic role model to the other boys, not just in golf but in all areas of school life.”

Alex and the school golf team recently won the HMC regional finals, qualifying them for the HMC National finals at the end of June – a fantastic week and end of half term for the team.
