All our Rugby Sevens teams from across the school enjoyed some superb fixtures at the weekend, and with some admirable results to boot. However, it was our U16 team who conquered all and finished the day unbeaten, lifting the cup after a 12-5 victory over Sedbergh in the final of the Oakham Cup.

Our U18s, who also played at Oakham, found the tournament tough going, winning two matches and losing three.

Meanwhile, the U15s and U14s both played at Ipswich. The U15s started strongly, beating New Hall 39-5, St. Benedict’s 44-12 and St. Joseph’s 24-12, earning them a place in the cup semi-final, where they deployed a fantastic attack strategy to beat Finborough School. In the final they were met by a very strong Brighton College who dominated much of the possession. When Bedford had possession, they attacked well, but the opposition were too strong out wide and ran in a few tries to win the final.

Particular mention must go to Ferdi Vincent-Barnett and Justin Fasanya, who played up an age group and did not look out of place doing so.

The U14s had a similar run in the group stages with comfortable victories against Bishop’s Stortford, Oundle and Woodlands, but narrowly lost in the semi-final of the cup. They played some fantastic flowing sevens with excellent ball movement and a committed defence which saw them beat Bishop’s Stortford High 30-5, Oundle 39-14 and Woodlands 28-10.

Unfortunately, they lost in the cup semi-final to Finborough School 19-17, with Finborough scoring in the last play of the game to win it.

Director of Rugby James Hinkins said, “All boys learned a lot and reflected well afterwards about what they could have done better. We witnessed some superb performances, notably from Kai Fisher, Kachi Onuiri and Charlie Collard, who were effective with the ball in hand and committed defensively. Overall, it was a great day out and all boys represented the school impeccably.”
