Our U16 Badminton Team spent an enjoyable and successful day at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes for the U16 National Badminton Finals on Saturday 28 April.

Anthony Hung joined last year’s seventh-placed team comprising of Oliver Medley, Edric Yeung and Leon Zhu. Together they formed quite possibly the strongest team in the school’s history.

Round One began with a 5-0 victory over Gosforth Academy. The boys then faced last year’s winners; Reading School. As there were no semi-finals, this game was effectively the final, with the winners of each group going on to play for the medals.

Leon began his singles match, but within two minutes had rolled over on his ankle and had to concede the game. Nathan Suen stepped in for the doubles match, but they lost 4-1. Edric won his singles match despite being unable to smash having aggravated his shoulder injury in the knock up. Leon and Edric were unable to play in Round Two so they had to concede two games each time. They lost 5-0 to Isaac Newton Academy and 4-1 to Tapton School with Oliver winning his singles game.

Next season’s badminton captain, Fung Lau, swapped his spectator role to team member for Round Two. Sadly, his games did not count but he won both the games with Oliver and one game with Nathan. Reading School went on to win the title with Bedford School finishing in sixth place, which was a fantastic achievement considering the team’s injury problems.
