Last weekend saw the welcome return of the Star Regatta, hosted by Bedford’s Star Rowing Club, and back in the boats were several crews from the Bedford School Boat Club.

Rowers, from across the Upper School, put on a display of some seriously good rowing against strong crews who had travelled the breadth of the south of England to compete – and with that came stiff competition.

The event proved memorable for the Bedford crews with some great wins and near wins celebrated:

  • Our 2nd VIII stole the show when they beat Nottingham University, Hampton’s 2nd VIII and Bedford Modern School’s 1st VIII to win the top tier VIIIs event of the regatta.
  • Our Colts battled hard and ended up beating Hampton to win the J16 8s.
  • The J15 A crew also beat Hampton to win J15 8s with the J15 B crew beating Oundle’s J15 A crew. However, they lost to Hampton in the final of J15 B 8s.
  • Our J14 A crew beat Norwich, but sadly lost to Hampton by just half a length in the final.
  • The J14 B and C crews ended up competing against each other in the final of the B octos event, with the B crew just winning by a canvas.
  • The J14 D crew gave an admirable performance to beat Bedford Modern School’s B crew before losing to our own B crew in the semi-final.

Parents and supporters of Bedford School were looked after, as always, by the unwavering support of Friends of Bedford School Boat Club, who served cake (donated by parents) and coffee as they cheered our crews toward the finish line along with spectators lined along the banks of the Great Ouse, soaking up the sun at this quintessentially British rowing affair.
