Another wonderful day of music was enjoyed on Monday 14 March when our Fifth and Sixth Form boys competed for the prestigious title of ‘Senior Young Musician of the Year’. There were impressive performances across all the different disciplines: strings, woodwind, brass, piano, organ and voice, with worthy winners in each of the six categories.

Following a similar format to the Junior Musician of the Year the adjudicators had the benefit of listening to all performances in one day and were able to discuss which performance was deserved of being the overall winner.

This year, the much-coveted title went to Upper Sixth Former James Watson for his performance of McDowall’s O Radix Jesse from O Antiphon followed by Bednall’s Toccata on Aberystwyth.

Jonathan Sanders, Director of Music, said, “We had a fantastic day on Monday, holding all of the Senior Music Prize competitions on the same day, with seven guest adjudicators. There was a real buzz of excitement around the Music Department all day, and there were some very worthy winners. The visiting adjudicators were very impressed with the overall standard and were delighted to award James Watson the Senior Young Musician of the Year award for his performance of two pieces on the organ, finishing with a flourish in Bednall’s Toccata on the hymn tune Aberystwyth.”

Prize winners in each category were:

Senior String Prize: Gideon Chan (Double Bass)

Senior Singing Prize: Caleb Sanders

Senior Brass Prize: Max Leung (Euphonium)

Senior Woodwind Prize: Oscar Calvert (Clarinet)

Senior Piano Prize: Isaac Dutson

Senior Percussion Prize: William Everitt (Drum kit)

Senior Organ Prize: (No prize as there was only one entry in this category competing for Senior Musician Prize only).
