There was a buzz in the air at our Langham Pavilion on Monday 25 September when a group of Sixth Form boys, along with girls from Bedford Girls’ School, attended the Overseas University Roadshow to learn more about the prospect of studying abroad after Sixth Form.

This is the fifth year running that Bedford School has hosted this event, run by The University Guys, with representatives from internationally renowned universities in the US, Europe and Canada. The fair gives students the opportunity to broaden their horizons and increase awareness of the different countries where they can continue their academic studies.

Mrs Becky Southern, Careers Adviser, explained, “Some students are already considering studying overseas when they leave Bedford School, so they come to this fair to get current information from university ambassadors about what different countries and universities are looking for when they apply. Other students are inquisitive about the opportunities to continue studying at degree level in another country, so they come to this event to find out more.”

There are many reasons why students might want to study abroad, whether it be to immerse themselves in a new culture, develop their language skills, experience a different style of education or simply to see the world and build a network of friends and acquaintances in a brand-new country.

Upper Sixth Former Sam Maling, who is applying to both The University of British Columbia and The University of Toronto in Canada, explained, “I am in a fortunate position where I have the option of studying abroad available to me. It’s a tricky one as there are things such as finances to consider. I have done a lot of research and I know it’s just something I really want to do. I think studying abroad will really suit the type of person I am.

“Events such as these are so important because they give you the chance to learn all about the key details. While you can glean information from a website or talk to friends, actually meeting a rep from the university can give you a proper understanding of the process and what is needed to apply. Speaking to someone in person gives you chance to get a bit more familiar with a particular university so you can make sure it’s the right decision for you.”

Studying abroad is just one of the options available to students. There are so many paths available – whether studying at a UK university, taking up a scholarship, or a degree apprenticeship. These decisions will affect the short and long-term futures of our boys, so fairs such as this one introduce the options earlier, giving them plenty of time to make informed decisions.
