A quick visit to the Prep School’s Music Club this week revealed that fun and creativity abound in equal measure.

Each Tuesday lunchtime, Prep boys of all ages, through free play, can explore their musical interests and creativity, and learn new software skills – all while having great fun. To join in, all that is needed is a passion for music and a curious mind.

The week we visited, the boys could choose between practising musical theory, exploring the culture of dance music or demonstrating MIDI, audio manipulation and AudioFix through the creation of a track on GarageBand.

The boys’ creations are brilliant, a fact which was evidenced in a recent composition competition that Mr Hubbard ran for them. Their challenge was to create an optimistic piece in the key of C Mixolydian using GarageBand and to incorporate various music tech techniques.

Speaking after the competition, Mr Hubbard was full of praise for the boys’ excellent compositions, and in particular, the winner of the competition: Stuart Phillips. He explained, “Stuart’s composition not only met the requirements but exceeded them with its innovative use of instrumentation and sound effects. It was clear to the judges that Stuart put a lot of thought and effort into his piece, which resulted in a winning result. Stuart’s piece truly stood out with its creative use of music tech techniques and its ability to capture the feeling of the future.”

Do take a listen to Stuart’s brilliant composition.
