The Phoenix Rugby 7s squad played their first tournament of the year at the recent Olney 7s. The pool stage saw Phoenix enjoy some free-flowing rugby as they advanced to the semi-final. Here they came up against a strong side “Kit for Kenya” led by Charlie Hicks (14-19), which featured several OBs. After a hard-fought match, Phoenix lost narrowly to Charlie’s team, who went on to win the final. Safe to say, the post-tournament celebrations went on long into the night.

The Phoenix is going from strength to strength, with this year the Club attracting even more new members. Having said that, the costs associated with running the Club, for those who are either at university or about to start in the world of work are an impediment preventing more from taking part. For this reason, the Club officers (Conor Finch (13-18), George Seward (07-18), Felix Iles (13-18) have set up a crowdfunding site and are asking members of the school community for a little bit of financial help to further develop the Club, as outlined HERE.

Next up for Phoenix, is the House of Hope 7s tournament on the 15th of July organised by Jack Goldberg (09-11). The event is being held in the memory of Jack’s grandfather, the anti-apartheid icon Denis Goldberg, who was sentenced to life imprisonment alongside Nelson Mandela and six others in 1964.  To find out more you can read an article published in the Ousel in 2016 HERE.
