It’s the midway point of the spring term which traditionally marks a pivotal point in the school’s Creative Arts calendar – the inspirational Detweiler Competition. Prizes are awarded in four categories: Art, Music, Drama and Creative Writing, with this year’s theme: ‘Life and Death’.

The competition was first introduced to the school in 1997 by Rob Campbell (Director of Art 1994-2013) and is named after the Canadian composer, author and patron of the arts, Dr Alan Detweiler, who so generously provided the prizes until his death in 2012.

The exhibition opened on Friday 1 March when parents, teachers and Old Bedfordians immersed themselves in the boys’ depictions of ‘Life and Death’.

We welcomed local illustrator Katie Allen and artist Fiona Wilson to school to judge the art competition and they had the incredibly hard task of selecting the winners for the 2D and 3D art prizes.

Visitors enjoyed drinks and canapés in the Main Foyer, before moving up to the Great Hall to watch the drama pieces and listen to the creative writing and music entries.

As always, the standard of entries in all four categories was extremely high. If you were unable to make the opening night, then do have a browse through the art and details of winners in our online publication below.
