Six gold, 24 silver and 55 bronze medals were awarded to our top mathematicians from Remove Form through to Upper Sixth Form in this year’s UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge.

However, it was maths prodigy, Jason He, in Remove Form who stole the show with a staggering score of 120, which means he answered every question, except one, correctly. Jason scored the highest in the school, which is all the more impressive, when you take into account that the challenge is predominantly aimed at Upper Sixth students.

Jason’s score places him in a very elite group of Bedford School boys. Old Bedfordians Tom Pelling (08-19) and Harry Chen (17-19) answered all questions correctly as Upper Sixth pupils, and both are currently reading mathematics at Cambridge and Oxford respectively.

Jason told us, “I was astonished by my result. I found the questions easier than last year, but I had no idea I would do so well.”

The UKMT maths challenge is a competition that gives students the opportunity to tackle a variety of engaging mathematical activities while developing teamwork and communication skills. High-scoring teams are invited to compete in the National Final.
