Sixth Form boys who sat their International Baccalaureate this summer are today celebrating a fantastic set of results.

Over half of the grades awarded were at level 7 or 6 (equivalent to an A*/A), and a quarter of the cohort achieved 40 points or more, placing them in an elite group of IB candidates across the globe.

We are thrilled as their excellent results have also secured their places in prestigious universities to study a diverse range of courses, including:

  • University of Oxford for Philosophy and Theology
  • University of St Andrews for Geography
  • Brighton and Sussex Medical School for Medicine
  • London School of Economics (LSE) for Economics and Philosophy
  • Loughborough University for Economics with Management

School leaver Sami Haroon told us that he was relieved more than anything on opening his results. Sami explained, “The IB cohort is an incredibly close-knit group, and we have all helped each other over the last couple of years. For my friends and I to obtain the results we worked for at the end of these two years is most definitely a relief.”

Sami is off to read Philosophy and Theology at Oxford in September. Philosophy is perhaps a natural path for Sami having chosen this subject for his IB. However, he credits his teachers in really helping him to achieve his overall mark.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have had great exposure to the department at school, and all the Philosophy teachers have been indispensable in facilitating my passion for the subject. It seems there is a teacher for every occasion. Whether I needed help preparing for my admissions test, interviews, coursework assignments, personal statement or anything of the like, there were always multiple teachers who were more than willing to help.” Sami explained.

With the skills acquired from Philosophy, Sami hopes to go on to enjoy a legal career.

Krish Nair was also over the moon with his set of results, which enable him to take up his university offer to read Economics and Philosophy at the London School of Economics (LSE). Krish has always found Philosophy interesting, but also enjoys the mathematical side of economics and its ‘real world’ focus – an area that this course will cover in detail.

Krish said, “The school is really organised with how they give deadlines. The school make everything manageable, and all the departments have been great at providing help in each aspect of the course. I have always been a generalist and I like to do a lot of subjects, which is something the IB enabled me to do.”

Captain of the 1st XV, Kieran Gilmour is another IB student who achieved an outstanding set of results. Kieran will read Economics with Management at Loughborough University to help him become more proficient in Business and Finance. Kieran chose Loughborough to help him manage a successful balance of high level of sport alongside completing a degree. Kieran juggled a lot of sport alongside his studies during Sixth Form and puts a lot of his success down to school, saying, “The school has given advice on how to manage the many commitments of Sixth Form and the teachers have been understanding of obligations and were often at hand to provide any extra help when needed.”

Relief was also Olly Blakemore’s first emotion when he saw his superb results, which have enabled him to fulfil his offer from Brighton and Sussex Medical School to read Medicine this coming September. Olly has always been scientifically curious and after researching careers, Medicine seemed an ideal fit as it aligned with his personal criteria such as job satisfaction and will provide daily interaction with different people.

Olly explained, “My goal is to become a surgeon. I’m not entirely sure on the specific field as of yet, however, I’m looking into cardio thoracic and neurology at the moment. The school and the IB have instilled me with a driven mindset and effective study techniques to bridge the gap between school and further education.”

Harry Hine was also extremely happy that he was able to meet his offer for St Andrews where he will choose to read either Geography or International Relations. Harry told us, “I hope to remain in education for a number of years, with aspirations to do a Masters and, perhaps, a PhD. I would like to thank the teachers for their support over the past two years, especially in the lead-up to the exams.”

And following in their footsteps…

The IB1 group, who are just coming up to the end of the Lower Sixth Form presented their Theory of Knowledge (TOK) exhibitions to an audience of teachers and staff last week, along with IB students from Bedford Girls’ School.

The exhibitions explored how epistemological questions manifest in the world around us. Students selected philosophical questions such as ‘To what extent is certainty attainable?’, which they explored through the lens of three objects. Students, staff and parents from both schools participated in this inaugural event, which was a fantastic opportunity to share high quality IB practice between Bedford Girls’ School and Bedford School.
