A good start would be to ask Upper Sixth Formers Enoch Mukungu and Jonathan Blake to take the reins. That is just what they did on Friday 28 September when they represented schools in Bedford at a dinner held to celebrate the centenary of the English Speaking Union (ESU).

The event, which was organised by the Ouse Valley Branch of the ESU, took place at The University of Bedfordshire’s Putteridge Bury Conference Centre. After the meal and an inspiring speech from The Rt. Hon. Lord Boateng, Enoch took part in a debate against a representative of schools in Milton Keynes. Opposing the motion “This House would discourage the use of English as a universal language,” he spoke with thoughtfulness and flair, winning the debate and drawing plaudits from the audience of ESU members and dignitaries. Jonathan, who was there as a reserve, played an integral role in researching the topic in the weeks leading up to the debate.

Both boys proved excellent company throughout what was an immensely enjoyable occasion.
