Take spaghetti, Sellotape and marshmallows, add 16 boys from across four Houses, add a dollop of competition, and you have the perfect ingredients for a truly brilliant House Science competition.

The boys, all from Y5 and Y6, excitedly took on the challenge of creating the tallest free-standing tower from just Sellotape and spaghetti and a bridge using marshmallows and spaghetti—the lunchtime competition against the clock called upon their design, structures and physics knowledge. However, success also required excellent communication and teamwork, which counted toward the final scores.

With the advice to keep it simple and to remember that triangles are strong, the boys dived into the challenge, and the activity was at fever pitch as the countdown commenced. The tension ratcheted further as the judging began – how much could their bridges support? Would their towers stand tall or droop? The shouts of excitement and the rapt expressions on the faces of the boys showed their investment in the challenges as the judging took place and the winners were announced.

Head of Science, Mr Mason, told us, “It was a brilliant competition, and the boys’ excitement was palpable. My congratulations go to all the boys for their enthusiasm, commitment, teamwork and support of each other. Plus, special congratulations to the winning House: Bunyan, who used the Effiel Tower as inspiration.”
