This Thursday saw the first ‘Great Seedling Swap’ in the Prep School, and it went down a storm. Over lunch, boys were queuing up to either swap seedlings they had grown at home or buy seedlings by making a £1 donation to this year’s Harpur House Charity: Men in Sheds.

With a wide variety of plants on offer, including vegetables such as pumpkins, chillies, aubergines and courgettes, and flowers including zinnias, sunflowers, cornflowers and nasturtiums, the boys were spoilt for choice. This brilliant bounty of seedlings was thanks to the gardening skills of boys, many of whom had excitedly taken up the challenge to grow plants from seed at home, and Mrs Chaillou-Kindred.

Mrs Chaillou-Kindred explained, “The idea behind the event was to get even more of our Prep School boys into growing things and gardening and then share the fruits of their labour to support our house charity. I am so delighted that the Great Seedling Swap has proved such a big hit and a great school community event, raising over £80”

A big thank you go to all the boys who grew seedlings, those who helped to make posters to promote the event and the Harpur House Officers who were on hand to help the boys to make their plant selections and donations to the brilliant Men in Sheds Charity.

About Men in Sheds

Men in Sheds is a charity that inspires and supports the development of community spaces for men, often later in life, to connect, converse and create. The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds, but for groups of men to enjoy together. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, but most importantly, they’re fun.
