Zahan Bharucha’s and Callum Fenton’s superb debating skills have secured them a place in this year’s ESU Schools Mace Regional Finals.

The boys impressed judges when they proposed the motion ‘This house supports the use of  all-women shortlists to redress the parliamentary gender imbalance’ in the second round of the debating competition held at Uppingham School on Wednesday 18 January 2017.

In the heat, which featured five strong teams, the boys showed exemplary debating skills, worked as a team and took the fight to a really strong Oundle opposition.

Head of English, Mr Nicholas Hopton, told us, “Callum and Zahan prepared for this highly-competitive heat entirely independently and fully deserve their place in the Regional Final.  The assured and intelligent way the boys communicated ideas and rebutted the opposition’s points was outstanding”.

Callum and Zahan are the second Bedford School pair to reach the regional finals of the ESU competition in the last two years.
