It was caps off to our Junior 18 Quad who were awarded gold medals for their victory on the Thames at a ceremony at the Fuller’s Brewery in London on 10 January.

Austin Roberts, Trent Abraham and Lennart Roese in the Upper Sixth, and Joshua Lyon in the Lower Sixth beat off stiff opposition to win the Junior Quad Challenge at the popular Fuller’s Head of the River Fours event on 3 November 2018. Not only did they win their division, making them the fastest school quad of the day, but they came in 31st place overall, which, considering this open event attracts national-level boats and crews from Oxford and Cambridge, is an excellent result for the boys.

The event, which first started in 1955, is rowed over the full four and a quarter mile Championship Course from the University Stone at Mortlake to the University Stone at Putney on the ebb tide, which is the Oxford and Cambridge boat race course in reverse. It hosts the largest number of entries for any one race in the UK at 550, and is always oversubscribed.

Pete Mulkerrins, Director of Rowing at Bedford School, said, “The boys had a great day at this highly respected event in the rowing calendar. They have been training hard together and this paid dividends when they secured the fastest school time trial of the day. The fact they were only beaten by two Leander quads shows great promise for the boys and I look forward to seeing their progress this season.”
