We are delighted to be able to shine a light this week on the entrepreneurial success of one of our Y6 boys.

During lockdown, Sebastian Bodfield had the idea of making candles for gifts based on his own Mum’s love of candles. From there, the seed of an idea grew into a business. Today, Sebastian is receiving orders from friends and family and selling his candles, scented with lavender, jasmine, lemongrass and Yuletide Spice, at his village store and both the Prep Guild’s Gift Fair and the Bedford Girls’ School Christmas Fair.

Sebastian started small, using jam jars found in a cupboard and a rice cooker to create his candles. He explained that the project required more patience and perseverance than he anticipated, “The process was much more time-consuming than I imagined. I also learned it is best to pick just one thing, focus on it, and keep adjusting to get it as good as you can.”

His initial sales allowed him to invest in a wax melter, and soon he was designing a logo for his company: YoYoCo, and printing labels online. He even thought about the impact of his product and is proud to say that the candles are eco-friendly, and the jars are recyclable.

When asked what is best about running his own business, he replied, “It makes you feel good that you are making something for someone else – and seeing them smile.”

A website is the latest element of his business, and he will start selling from this a little closer to Christmas. His family are already on hand to support him, as he explained, “My whole family are helping me with production and gift wrapping now, and everyone I know is getting a candle for Christmas!” We think they are going to be even busier!
