Over 220 students and their parents from around the borough joined Bedford School boys at Bedford School’s inaugural Employers’ Fair on Friday 16 June.

With a diverse range of employers – 25 in total – all under one roof, the fair provided students with a great opportunity to research career options and network with representatives from potential industries and companies. Students were also able to consider numerous career path options, ask essential questions and find out what qualifications are needed.

The fair was held during the school day as well as after school, which gave lower year groups the chance to attend too. After school, the fair was opened up to students from Bedford Modern School, Bedford Girls’ School, Castle Newnham, Sharnbrook, St Thomas More and Goldington Academy, as well as Bedford School boys who did not attend during the day.

Fourth Former Finley Miller told us, “I took a particular interest in the construction apprenticeships and talking to the employers about how to get into both the job and explore how the job progresses.”

Employers in attendance included the NHS, Beds Police, Royal Air Force, Lockheed Martin, EY, Anglian Water, Centre Parcs and Gerald Eve, to name a few. Boys in the younger year groups were given a postcard to collect stamps from each meaningful interaction. In order to support their conversations with the employers, they were also given list of possible questions to ask.

Emily Fox-Johnson, Careers and UCAS Coordinator said after the event, “We are delighted at the success of Bedford School’s inaugural Employers’ Fair. It was fantastic to see the boys engage so confidently with the employers and for them to have the opportunity to speak to professionals from such a broad range of organisations. We hope that the event will have given students an insight into different job sectors and pathways, including skills and qualifications required. These events are particularly important for providing inspiration and raising aspirations, and it was wonderful to be able to extend the invite to students from local schools as well.”
