If you are ever curious about dragons, our Y4 ‘Dragon Boys’ are the boys to seek out.

These intrepid boys have amassed an incredible wealth of knowledge about dragons, from mythical dragons in stories to real dragons, including the Komodo Dragon, all while enhancing their literacy skills.

The boys learned more about these remarkable reptiles this week thanks to a brilliant learning session with Stormfly, our Bearded Dragon.

Mrs Emms, who looks after Stormfly and is our resident expert, joined the boys in our outdoor classroom, the Welly, for the hands-on fact-finding session.

The boys discovered –

  • Bearded Dragons get their name from the beard-like spines on their chin. They puff these up as a defence mechanism when they are threatened or attacked.
  • They have a third eye called a parietal eye, which allows them to detect movement, such as hawks.
  • They have fantastic vision and hearing and can even swim.
  • They can change colour slightly to blend into their surroundings.
  • When they meet another Bearded Dragon, they nod their head and wave.

The boys also learned to pick up Stormfly and hold her without scaring her. They even tried feeding her some of her favourite treats: crickets and mealworms.

Mrs Rossington told us, “The boys have been learning about Dragons throughout the year, so meeting and handling Stormfly was a wonderful experience. The boys were brilliantly curious, kind and careful with her, and the session has given them plenty of fantastic facts to add to their fact files and stories.”

“It simply isn’t an adventure worth telling if there aren’t any dragons.”
