We are delighted to announce that we have a European Junior Jiu-Jitsu double bronze medallist in our midst.

Rafael Spajic (Y7) took his love for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to new levels of success when he competed in the European Junior Championships at the Aldersley Leisure Village, Wolverhampton.

Rafael competed in two styles of the martial art, Gi and Nogi. Gi is fought in a traditional uniform of jacket and drawstring trousers with a coloured belt, akin to Judo and Karate. In Nogi, competitors wear shorts and t-shirts or rashguards, so there is no fabric to grab.

The level of combat skill at the European Junior Championships was of the highest order, with each match hard-fought. As at every major open tournament, it brought together new stars from all corners of the globe. Rafael did superbly to take two bronzes in this elite event, in what is just his fifth major tournament. Rafael also won a silver in the English Open Championships earlier this year.

Headmaster Ian Silk commented, “My congratulations go to Rafael. He is a wonderful role model for fellow pupils and an example of what can be achieved when you follow your passion with unwavering commitment and determination.”
