Lunchtime (as well as before and after school) is always action-packed, and with over 80 clubs in the Prep School for boys to enjoy, there is, quite literally, something for every boy.

Pokémon Club is one club that, throughout the year, has captured the imagination of all year groups – so much so that Y3 and Y4 now have their own dedicated club; such was the demand!

While Pokémon may have fallen in and out of fashion over the years, it is certainly proving popular with the boys this year, who love to play and trade the collectable cards (only allowed during club time at school). Whilst a fun activity for them, we are pleased to encourage the club for its many benefits, often unbeknownst to the boys.

During play, it is brilliant to witness boys developing their maths skills by making quick mental calculations to know when to strike and ensure they have the numbers to do so safely. With instructions to follow, the game also encourages their reading and comprehension. Strategic thinking, evaluation skills and critical thinking also come to the fore.

Equally significantly, Pokémon Club aids boys’ social development, offering them all a place to connect with other players, make new friends and improve their social skills. Sportsmanship and fair play also follow as boys learn to win and lose gracefully.

As with so many clubs, it is a joy to see the boys discovering a new activity that they develop a passion for, growing in confidence and gaining new skills as they engage with each other, developing existing friendships and forming new ones too.
