Memories were made celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, from street parties to tree planting, getting together with family and friends, or simply watching the parade on television.

However, for 18 boys and six members of staff, achieving the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Platinum Jubilee Medallion in honour of the Queen, can also be added to their list.

The special jubilee award, which centres around the basic skills of lifesaving training and water safety, was developed to celebrate the Queen’s 70 years of service and launched on 2 June to coincide with the Jubilee weekend. The Queen herself became the first young person in the Commonwealth to achieve the RLSS Junior Respiration Award, providing an example to young people and going on to help the society establish lifesaving and resuscitation qualifications across the Commonwealth.

Thanks to Chris Howes, Pool Caretaker and staff trainer, who delivered the award at Bedford School, 24 places on the course were made available – all of which were filled. The award itself comprises a combination of practical skills such as resuscitation and water rescue skills, it also has an element for knowledge all of which were taught and assessed on the day. Chris, along with Lifesaving Trainer Graham Thorsby, delivered the training before assessing each person to see if they were worthy of being awarded the medallion.

We are pleased to inform, that all candidates passed and were given their Platinum Jubilee Medallions on the day along with a goody bag and, of course, their celebratory Jubilee medallion.

The feedback from the boys was very positive and, as well as learning vital lifesaving skills, a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all.

“Learning was made fun.”

“Enjoyed rescuing the manikin from the bottom of the pool.”

“I learnt that the rescuer must always stay safe when performing a rescue.”

Chris Howes commented, “There will only be 1,891 of these medallions awarded in the UK, so to have 24 from the Bedford School community passing on the launch date is a real testimony to Bedford School.”
