Many Ukrainian families, mainly women and children, are being hosted in Bedford and the surrounding villages. It is envisaged that more than two hundred will be living in our community by the end of this year.

Past parent, Manfred Saenger, has been leading a local initiative which, through the kind generosity of the community, has provided over fifty bikes to Ukrainian families. However, they need more to fulfil the demand:

“It has become apparent that transport is a major issue for them as they seek work, attend schools, and keep regular appointments. These proud people also wish to be as independent from their hosts as they can be.

Do you have a bike you no longer use or want, which is in reasonable condition? We are particularly looking for twelve ladies’, three gents’, and five children’s (suitable for 12–16-year-olds) bikes, in addition to two child seats (up to the age of 3) suitable for either ladies’ or gents’ bikes.”

Before the bikes are dispatched to their new owners, they are checked and made safe by Manfred and his team. This involves buying spare parts and other items such as helmets, bike locks and bells. If you are unable to supply a bike, but would like to make a small donation to help them cover costs, this would be much appreciated.

The Rotary Club of Bedford Park is coordinating the collection of donations. Those wishing to make a contribution can do so online here – please mention ‘Ukrainian bike appeal’ in the comment section when filling in the form and remember to tick the gift aid box (if you are eligible).

If you think you can help the initiative, please get in touch in the first instance with Hugh Maltby, Director of the Bedford School Association – 07824 308099 or hmaltby@bedfordschool.org.uk
