Every boy in the Prep School (Y3 to Y8), along with our Computer Scientists in the Upper Sixth, participated in the annual Bebras challenge, which commenced on Monday 17 November 2023.

The challenges vary according to the pupil’s age, but all aim to introduce computational thinking and create excitement and enthusiasm in this field. Our youngest pupils approached their challenges by thinking logically, as a computer would, and many were fortunate to have one of our Upper School student digital leaders on hand to get them started.

Kevin Xu (Upper Sixth), one of the Digital Leaders, was delighted to help out, proving to be a brilliant digital ambassador and role model for the boys. Kevin, who is studying Computer Science at A-Level, gained a great deal personally from the experience; he explained, “As it is my last year in the school, I am keen to make a mark by giving back where I can. By helping in computer science in both the Prep and Upper School, I am learning how to teach others. Alongside gaining an explicit and logical understanding of the subject, learning how to explain computer science in simple terms is also really beneficial.”

Head of Computer Science in the Prep School, Mrs Dale, said, “May I say a big thank you to Kevin, Ivan, Abhi and Toby, the Digital Leaders who helped out this week. Their help was invaluable. It was also wonderful to see boys of all ages enjoying the various challenges this week (some even coming in at lunchtime to take part!), which help boost their resilience, problem-solving, and time-management skills. These are brilliant skills for the boys to learn at a young age and will serve them well throughout their time at school and beyond.”
