If there is one thing that boys love, it is a little competition! For this reason, excitement was running high on Tuesday 27 September as our Upper School boys took to track and field at the Bedford Athletics Stadium for their annual sports day.

Thankfully, the weather held off and the boys, as usual, were superb in their participation and support of each other.

Sports day never fails to deliver a fantastic afternoon of House sport, which epitomises the loyalty and spirit within the houses and the culture of sport in the school as a whole. Boys on the track and in the field events showed a high degree of endeavour and technical ability as they gave their all. They were supported positively and vociferously by other members of their House as they cheered on from the side-lines.

Notable performances came from Caleb Sanders in the senior 100m and St. Peter’s relay, Rupert Cracknell in the Fifth Form 400m, Ben Morrow in the Fifth Form 100m and Danny Chapman in the Remove Form 1500m.

Mr Barry Burgess, Director of Sports, said, “Sports day is a real community event, where teachers across the whole school help to support by either running an event, keeping time or chaperoning the boys. The sports department would not be able to run it alone and so a heartfelt thanks to all the staff who were involved with officiating on the day. The Housemasters did a fantastic job in getting the teams together and finally, and most importantly, the boys did themselves proud – their effort and performances, and the superb way they conducted themselves on and off the track, was commendable.”

Of course, it would not be a competition without a winner, and this year, for the second year running, the sports day trophy goes to Ashburnham, followed by St Peter’s in second place and Crescent in third.
