There really is something for everyone to get involved within the month of  ‘Movember’, all in a bid to raise awareness of important topics that affect men’s health.

Aussie Rules Football is one of those events that, year after year, encourages boys of all sporting abilities to don their football boots and get stuck in.

Our Bedford school resident Australians; Wallace, Palmer and Wise, aka teachers Dr Albin Wallace, Mr Charlie Palmer and Mr Ross Wise were at the helm. After they gave the boys the all-important introduction to the unique and obscure rules of Australian Rules Football, the boys were keen to try out their skills with the kangaroo leather Sherrin ball.

Whilst their kicking skills were impressive, it was the dreaded handball (you cannot throw the ball) which proved to be the nemesis of many! The training session was held in gorgeous November sunshine, and it was clear by the end of the session that the boys were keen for match day on the Thursday, where not only bragging rights awaited but, more importantly, the prestigious and highly coveted St. Kilda football club scarf (kindly donated by Dr Wallace).

Matchday bore witness to the annual Movember Challenge match, and both teams were keen to put on a good display of skill and athleticism. The 2nd XV pitch hosted the clash, and in a very close encounter both sides quickly grasped the pace and intensity of the game, which would not have looked out of place on any ground in suburban Melbourne. In the end, man of the match went to Ben Guest, who won the annual St Kilda scarf.

This was another wonderful exhibition of one of the greatest games, enjoyed by all, and more importantly, raising much needed funds for Movember.

The Lower Sixth are already looking for their opportunity to participate next year!
