Eben Clarke, Oliver Smart (Y6), Hugo O’Boyle and Major Grewal (Y5), from the school’s Debating Society, headed across town on Thursday 24 November, to take part in a debate against Bedford Modern School.

The team has been avidly preparing for this event since September: learning how to formulate logical arguments, use evidence and examples to support ideas and effectively rebut the opposition.

The boys debated whether school holidays should be shortened, the issues of keeping animals in captivity and whether books are more educational than films.

All the boys were confident and poised and delivered their arguments succinctly, with Oliver taking a worthy second place for best overall speaker.

Speaking afterwards, Miss Bamber proudly told us, “All boys spoke brilliantly and were great ambassadors for the school, and we look forward to hosting Bedford Modern School in a return fixture.”
