We were delighted to welcome art teachers from some of our feeder prep schools into school on Wednesday 7 June for a day filled with specialist art training.

The mixed group of 18 teachers were greeted by Director of Art, Michael Croker, who welcomed the group over coffee in the Art School’s painting studio. The art teachers were then able to choose to attend two out of three specialist workshops run by Bedford School teachers, who are all practising artists.

They chose from:
Printmaking – A workshop run by Mrs Fiona Whiteman, which explored how to make the most of the linocut process through experimentation with backgrounds and printing techniques.
Drawing – Led by Mr Michael Croker, which looked at a number of different approaches to drawing that were both fun and expressive.
Sculpture – Held in our bright and airy Sculpture Studio and taught by Mr James Nicholl. This enabled the artists chance to experiment with and create portraits and figures with wire.

Mr Croker explained, “We have run this Art Inset course for several years now and it has grown hugely in popularity; not only does the day provide art teachers with advice, ideas and practical experience, but also the opportunity to network and share best practice – all of which are instrumental in ensuring pupils are well-equipped and prepared for when they start studying art at the next level.”

Days such as these are also incredibly important to ensure young artists transition from their Prep School to Upper School as smoothly as possible, and the relationships formed help us retain a connection with the boys’ previous schools, which in turn helps with their ongoing education journey.
