Teamwork, communication, and listening skills are always essential, but especially so when you have a time bomb to diffuse, a river to cross, or even a nuclear reaction to stop! All these were challenges faced—through fun games—by our Y6 boys and girls from Bedford Girls’ School during their fun activity day together.

The pupils, who spent half a day at Bedford Prep and half a day at Bedford Girls’ School, engaged in a whole raft of fun team-building activities. It was great to see them honing existing skills and learning new ones, including plate spinning and climbing.

One highlight was undoubtedly ‘back-to-back drawing’; here, the boys and girls split into ‘listener’ and ‘speaker’ pairs. The speaker described the image for the listener to draw, but the listener could not speak. Also, as the couples were back-to-back, neither could see each other’s paper. This brilliant challenge genuinely tests how each duo works together and encourages them to think about how to communicate effectively . . . and the result: some hilarious pictures.

Another highlight was the marble run. The challenge: to get a marble through a giant maze to the finish. Not quite so simple when you are blindfolded and need to rely on instructions from the one person on the team who can see the maze. Some serious listening skills and teamwork were required here to succeed!

As ever, the fun day for the two schools proved hugely successful and will no doubt fuel much laughter and many animated conversations on journeys home.
