Wednesday 28 April 2021 may have seemed an ordinary day for many. However, it was an extremely important day for our Prep boys, as it saw the resumption of inter-school sport fixtures following the long haul through COVID-19. The excitement was palpable.
The U12 A, B and C cricket teams faced Berkhamsted at home, while the U13 A, B and C played away in their first fixture since March 2020, and what a great start it was, with Bedford winning all six matches. There were some close results, with the U13B winning by three runs and the U12A winning by 13, but the other wins were quite comfortable for Bedford. There were also many highlights in this first fixture of the summer, chilly though it was! However, special mention must go to Leo Mathew (U12A) who took a hat trick – one caught, one stumped, one bowled.
Our U11A, U10A and U10B teams all played matches against Milton Keynes Prep. The U11A team won comfortably, but the U10 teams lost out. However, it was wonderful to see the camaraderie and sportsmanship on show from our boys from the start. All the Bedford teams tried to share the action between their teammates by retiring batsmen when they had had enough time at the crease and by allowing as many boys as possible to bowl. In the U10A match, special mention must go to Joshua Edmunson and Harry Spencer, who both retired after amassing excellent scores, Joshua 30 from 27 balls and Harry 42 from 33, to give their teammates opportunities to bat. In the U12B match, Harry Howlet took an impressive 3 wickets for 7 runs, and Advik Mistra and Thomas Noble scored 26 runs and 28 runs not out. Nevertheless, all the boys did amazingly well in the cold conditions and must be commended for their resilience.
Overall, it was a super start to what we love at Bedford Prep School – playing sport!
