Many congratulations to Upper Sixth Former Tom Pelling, whose flair for Maths has seen him recognised nationally. Tom was recently awarded a gold medal from the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT), for his outstanding performance in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge held just before Christmas. Tom achieved 100% in the first round, which saw him invited to sit the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 (BMO1). Tom achieved an incredible 49 out of 60 which earned him the medal and placed him in the top 16 mathematicians in the country for his age group. It also gave Tom automatic entry to the BMO2, which he will sit at the end of January.
As a result of his high score, the UKMT invited Tom to attend the UKMT BMO mathematics training camp which was held in Hungary over the Christmas holidays. The purpose of the camp was to prepare a team of mathematicians to compete at a national level. Sadly, Tom did not make the final UK team, however he is first on the reserve list, so an opportunity to compete with the team could still be on the table.
Tom received some more good news this week: an offer to read Mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge. We wish him the very best of luck with his upcoming A-Levels which he is sitting in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
