Old Bedfordians fortunate enough to have played cricket for the school 1st. XI may quite possibly look back on those days as being among the most enjoyable of their sporting lives, and in retirement like to rekindle memories of runs scored and/or wickets taken. They might also harbour moments of regret at getting out to shots that in retrospect were ill-judged – hopefully not too often! The stimulus for choosing to write this account of post-war cricket at Bedford School was largely the result of two items that featured in ‘OB News’. First there was an observation made by The Headmaster, James Hodgson, while he was inspecting the new pavilion. He noted that the name of my old teammate and skipper John Poustie appears on five consecutive cricket team plaques, 1962-65. John later became an extremely popular master at Exeter School where he taught for 21 years but sadly developed Alzheimer’s and died in 2017 at the age of 67.
