Oliver Harris (Y8) is no stranger to 3D modelling. During lockdown last year, he created a superb 3D model of the main school building—a project that took him two terms (eight months in total) to complete, from sketching the various parts for the building to creating them on OnShape (an online computer-aided design software system) to 3D printing them and then, finally, the build! Now, he is sharing the knowledge and skills he gained through the project with boys in Y6 to Y8.

When asked in his monitor application, ‘What club would you introduce, if you could?’, a 3D printing club sprang to mind. Today, his idea is a reality, and boys are enjoying learning how to use the OnShape system through the club. This week, he guided boys through the system’s functions and got them up and running in creating 3D shapes. Over the next two weeks, their project, set by Oliver, is to develop Christmas decorations to 3D print and take home. Looking ahead, Oliver is already formulating plans for more exciting projects for the club, which he hopes boys will find both fun and valuable in DT as they use CAD in the spring term.

While his interest in 3D design started during lockdown to make the most of the spare time available, his interest has continued to grow. And while his first passion remains karting, Oliver hopes he can use his 3D skills in the future to help design and make parts for his go-kart.

We cannot help but be inspired, as are the boys, by his drive and enthusiasm to learn new skills and his generosity in sharing them.
