Year 4 Visit to our Planetarium and Observatory

Year 4 Visit to our Planetarium and Observatory

To kick off their new Science topic on light, our Year 4 boys stepped into a world of discovery right here on our school estate, with a visit to our very own planetarium and observatory.

Guided by our Astronomer in Residence, Mr Guise, boys were captivated by fascinating facts about the sources of light in our galaxy and beyond. They explored how light helps us see, how lenses bend light and how shadows form.

The boys’ session included incredible images captured through the school’s telescopes and a look at some of the most advanced telescopes on Earth and in space, including the brilliantly named ELT – Extremely Large Telescope.

The boys learned how astronomers use light and its different wavelengths to uncover the universe’s secrets. While humans see only a tiny slice of radiation called ‘visible light’, telescopes that detect other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum reveal a dramatically different view of space.

Curiosity was everywhere. The boys asked insightful questions, showing how this immersive experience connected classroom learning with real-world science. From bending light to exploring the mysteries of the cosmos, the visit sparked excitement and wonder—setting the stage for a fantastic term of scientific discovery.
