We were delighted for OB Will Briggs (02-09) to see that Cambridge beat Oxford 20-10 in the 136th historic battle of the blues on Thursday 7 December, but we appreciate that a Cambridge victory does not necessarily please all Old Bedfordians!

The day was doubly special for Will, who is studying for his PhD in Medicine at Magdelene College, as he became the only player to have ever played in seven Varsity Matches – a tremendous achievement.

Over the last six years Briggs has been joined in the Light Blues by numerous OBs, including Ilia Cherezov (03-08), Oliver Clough (00-11), Sam Farmer (07-10) and Harry Peck (97-98) and in last year’s dramatic victory helped Cambridge to end Oxford’s six-year dominance and propelled himself into the record books (for the first time!) as only the second player to have played in six University Varsity matches, an accomplishment he had shared with Herbert Fuller.

Overall there have been 136 Varsity rugby matches with Cambridge winning 63, Oxford winning 59, and 14 draws.
