As a boarding school, wellbeing has to be of paramount importance—for boarders and day boys alike. Every boy benefits from the strong culture of care, connection and kindness that comes from living and learning in a close-knit community.

A Culture of Kindness and Support

Kindness is the value that underpins everything at Bedford, shaping daily life across the school. Inclusion and allyship are core expectations, and boys are supported in building respectful, thoughtful relationships both within and beyond the school community. Whilst some might expect a boys’ school to feel intense or overly competitive, the reality is quite different. Free from certain social pressures, boys tend to be more relaxed, open and collaborative. The result is a famously warm and welcoming atmosphere, where boys feel confident and comfortable being themselves.

Physical and Mental Health

Our on-site medical centre is staffed by a dedicated team of five nurses who provide kind, professional care. Their approach is holistic, considering each boy’s physical, psychological and social wellbeing. A sports therapist/physiotherapist is also available twice a week during term time.

The school’s long-established counselling service is available five days a week. Boys are free to speak with a counsellor in complete confidence whenever they need support. Parents can also be seen and referred to counsellors in their locality if ongoing support is required.

Spiritual Wellbeing

The school Chapel is a peaceful and inclusive space that plays a meaningful role in Bedford life. Boys attend weekly assemblies here, and the Chapel hosts regular services and provides a place for quiet moments of reflection when needed. Rooted in the Christian tradition but welcoming to all faiths and none, it offers a space for everyone. The Chaplain is always available for pastoral support, and all members of the school community are welcome.

“Kindness underlies everything, making the school a really happy place.”

Talk Education

“An enviable community where boys look out for each other across the year groups – a truly brotherly atmosphere.”

In Partnership with Parents

We work collaboratively with parents to support each boy’s wellbeing. Our Parent Partnership Programme complements the PSHE (Citizenship) curriculum and includes a series of talks and workshops throughout the year. We also regularly share guidance, articles, websites and book recommendations to help parents stay informed and involved.

The Dining Hall

Mealtimes at Bedford are more than just a break in the day—they are a chance for boys to come together, recharge and enjoy a shared sense of community. Staff join boys for meals every day, and we understand how important good food is—especially for teenage boys who, as we like to say, often run on their stomachs.

Our Dining Hall is a lively, welcoming space offering a wide variety of healthy, tasty options to keep boys energised—whether they are in the classroom, on the pitch or relaxing with friends. We also cater for a broad range of dietary requirements, ensuring everyone is well looked after.
