Life at Bedford
Bedford is, first and foremost, a boarding school, and all boys—whether they board or not—benefit from the strength of our boarding ethos.
Living and Learning Together
With around 200 boys and 40 staff living on-site, the boarding community sits at the heart of school life, shaping a culture of continuity, support and communal living. While over 80% of boys are from the UK, more than 30 nationalities are represented, giving the school a global outlook that prepares boys well for life beyond Bedford.
Boarders make up around a third of the Upper School, and their presence helps define the rhythm and tone of the week for everyone. The extended timetable, including Saturday school, creates space for co-curricular opportunities that simply would not be possible in a day school. It also allows for a more balanced pace to the week, resulting in a calmer and more productive environment for all boys, day and boarding alike.
A Strong Sense of Belonging
Every boy belongs to a house, each with its own distinct character, history, and traditions. Our six boarding houses are each paired with a day house through a unique twinning system, creating a shared identity and strong sense of community. Within their house, boys join a vertically structured tutor group giving them the chance to mentor and lead younger pupils, learn from older pupils and simply be together without peer pressure. This unique structure fosters natural leadership development and breaks down age barriers, creating a supportive school community.
We aim to keep boys with the same tutor throughout their time at Bedford, allowing for strong, trusting relationships to form. Tutors monitor academic progress closely and, working in partnership with parents, provide tailored support and guidance.
Teaching Beyond the Classroom
Our staff are chosen not only for their ability to teach and inspire in the classroom, but also for their commitment to life beyond it. We believe that the relationships formed between boys and teachers outside lessons are what make Bedford’s community so special. While our facilities are outstanding, it is our people—and the way they engage with the boys—that truly define the school.
Staff involvement continues into the evenings and across weekends, allowing them to get to know boys well and understand what motivates them. These shared experiences build strong pupil-teacher relationships across both boarding and day, offering benefits that go beyond what a day school alone can provide.
With our deep understanding of boys, shaped by living and working alongside them, we know how to bring out the best in each one of them.
Learning for Life
We teach PSHE through our carefully designed Citizenship Programme that reflects our expertise in how boys learn best. Engaging speakers, interactive workshops and off-timetable experiences help boys to connect with important topics in meaningful ways.
Dedicated Citizenship days give boys the chance to explore themes such as democracy and justice, rights and responsibilities, and identity and diversity. Many of these sessions are run in partnership with our sister school, Bedford Girls’ School, giving boys and girls the opportunity to learn from each other and engage with a range of perspectives. These experiences help boys to develop strong moral foundations and a thoughtful, outward-looking approach to the world.
