Bedford School has a thriving Art Department where individual creativity is seen to be a core and vital part of education that encourages students to engage with and relate to the world around them.

For those who study Art at GCSE, A-Level and IB our objective is for boys to work with confidence and ambition. Individuality and diversity are seen to be fundamental and all boys are encouraged to aspire to excellence. Furthermore, the hope is that boys are inspired and retain an interest in art for life. Many Bedford School art students continue with their studies at high profile universities and art colleges with courses including fine art, history of art, design, architecture and Art Foundation courses.

The Art School, located in a characterful mid 1750s Georgian building, has three specialist studios for painting, printmaking and sculpture so students work within the broad boundaries of Fine Art. All three art teachers are practising artists, which is integral to our ethos.

Enrichment Opportunities

Regular exhibitions in the school Foyer Gallery, visits to museums and galleries, annual art study tours abroad, weekly life drawing classes and the Gilbert Lloyd Art lectures are all intended to stimulate, provoke and engage all boys whether art students or not. The annual Detweiler Art competition provides an opportunity for all boys to exhibit and present their work to the wider school community.
