Upper Sixth Former Oliver Simmonds has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the third generation in his family to be awarded major sports Colours in more than one sport – a prestigious honour recognising pupils who represent Bedford School at first-team level in major sports.
Oliver has earned his colours in rugby, hockey, and cricket, following in the footsteps of his father, Old Bedfordian Robin Simmonds (81–91), who received the same accolade during his time at the school. The tradition began with Oliver’s grandfather, Old Bedfordian Richard Simmonds (50–61), who was awarded Major Colours in rugby and rowing.
This exceptional achievement highlights a proud family legacy of sporting excellence at Bedford.
Reflecting on his achievement, Oliver shared that earning triple colours had been a long-standing goal. “When I joined Bedford School, I set out to represent the first teams in all three sports,” he said. “Achieving that was incredibly rewarding and knowing my father and grandfather had done similar made it even more special. My parents are really proud, and I know my grandad would have been too.”

Sport has always been a central part of the Simmonds family life. Robin recalls his own school days fondly, describing sport at Bedford as “one of the best times of my life”. He credits it with shaping his character and career – “It gave me lifelong friendships, fuelled my competitive spirit, and taught me the value of teamwork and leadership – skills that have been invaluable in business.”
Among his many sporting memories, the 1990/91 rugby season, stands out. “We had a particularly strong 1st XV that year,” Robin said. “We beat Harrow by over 50 points, and their coach, Roger Uttley – who was also coaching England at the time – came into our changing room to congratulate us. That moment has always stayed with me.”
The family’s sporting legacy stretches back even further. Robin recalls a story his father used to tell. “He was quite lean when he started at Bedford, so his mother fed him steak and eggs every morning to help him bulk up enough to play hooker and row in the first eight!”

For Oliver, balancing three sports at first-team level has been demanding but fulfilling. “Playing sport seven days a week for the last 10 years has been intense,” he admitted, “but school has made it possible. The directors of sport have been incredibly supportive, and the staff have helped me stay physically prepared for each season.”
He added that the school’s flexibility and guidance have been key to his success. “It’s not easy switching between rugby, hockey and cricket, especially with the different physical demands. But the coaches have helped me manage my conditioning so I’m ready for each sport at the right time.”
As Oliver prepares to leave Bedford, he does so not only with a rare sporting honour but also as the latest chapter in a proud family tradition.
