As a part of their topic curriculum studies on the British Isles, Y5 boys have recently been studying tea and its importance as a part of our rich and varied culture.
The boys gained an insight and understanding of tea’s popularity in Britain and its major social, political and economic implications. Did you know that tea provided calories for labourers during the Industrial Revolution and supported the rise of the British Empire?
Boys also learnt that the UK is the third-largest tea-drinking nation per capita, behind Turkey and the Republic of Ireland. 84% of the UK population drinks tea daily, with around 100 million cups consumed each day*.
So, it was only fitting to include tea in the finale of the topic: a traditional tea party for our Y5 families.
The assembled guests enjoyed all the trimmings of an afternoon tea, from sandwiches (including jam ones) to cakes and scones with more jam and lashings of cream, prepared and served by the boys. The boys, who were consummate hosts, also created themed table decorations and quizzes to make this British celebration even more special.
The boys mingled afterwards, chatting about all they had studied and learnt this term. It was a lovely atmosphere and enjoyed by all.
In Y5, boys engage in topic lessons that blend history, geography and religious studies. This interdisciplinary approach helps the boys transition smoothly from Y3 and Y4.
