On Thursday 24 April, our Debating Society had the pleasure of hosting Bedford Modern pupils for an exciting afternoon of debate.
The afternoon offered pupils from both schools the opportunity to try their hand at formal debates, hone their oracy skills and grow their confidence – all in a supportive environment.
The pupils debated a variety of topics, including:
- Whether school trips are beneficial
- Whether every home should have a pet
- Whether school-age children should have daily chores
- Whether the internet is, overall, beneficial for children
It was inspiring to see our boys confidently step forward to format their arguments, take on the roles of speakers and adopt the formal debating style with the help of stem sentences.
Congratulations to Gurvir, Rory, Olly and Jack in Year 5 and Tommy, Seb, Matt and Paddy in Year 6 for their outstanding debates and brilliant overall win for Bedford Prep School. The skills they have cultivated through Debating Society were evident throughout the event.
Mrs Bamber praised the boys, saying, “The boys spoke with clarity and confidence, engaging the audience and judges alike, showing strong argumentation skills and a real passion for the task. It was a truly impressive display of critical thinking and eloquence. I am incredibly proud of them all.”
Overall, this house believes that our Bedford Prep debating boys clearly showed some superb debating skills, and the judges certainly agreed. We look forward to seeing them in action in future debates and competitions.
